Buffalo Sabres, RW Max Afinogenov 's name is making its way through the labyrinth of NHL rumours. The KHL is throwing around coin like its going out of style these days, and its teams are reportedly loading up on Russian-born NHLers. Alexei Kovalev is said to be considering a $6 million US, no tax, one year offer by a KHL squad.

Its being rumoured that the Washington Capitals have lost the services of both C Sergei Fedorov and Viktor Kozlov to teams in the Russian Elite League. GM George McPhee will likely look to the Hershey Bears for replacements, as he has C Kyle Wilson (28/30 and +13) young RW, Graham Mink (32/27 and +26) on the come. Uber Swede, Backstrom distinguished himself as a point machine this past season, and he played very capably on the other side of the puck as well.

Kozlov is the intriguing piece because he had been riding shotgun for AO and Semin on and off for most of the past couple of regular seasons and Playoffs. One concludes that McPhee will look for a veteran to get AO the rock. The name I'm hearing is Afinogenov.

A veteran of nine tours of duty in Buffalo, Max languished through his worst offensive season. In 48 games, 61 was 6/14 and a paultry -7. A change of scenery will do he and the Sabres a lot of good. He wants out. They don't want to keep him.

Think of it this way. The prospect of a Semin-Ovechkin-Afinogenov troika will cause Bruce Boudreau's opponents to lay awake at night, staring at the ceiling fan with cold sweat gushing from every pore.

Based on his production, and lack thereof in recent years, Afinogenov's cap-friendly ticket will not scare most GM's. 61 is set to become UFA on July 1.
