The Washington Capitals made it official today that Mitch Korn will be the teams new goalie coach, replacing Olaf Kolzig.

Korn has over 35 years of coaching experience and helped current Nashville goaltender, Pekka Rinne to back-to-back Vezina nominations, and helped develop former Capital and Predator, Tomas Vokoun. Korn also worked with Dominik Hasek in Buffalo, during which Hasek won 4 Vezina Trophies.

Korn reunites with Head Coach Barry Trotz, whom he worked with for 16 seasons in Nashville.

Per Caps PR:

“I am very pleased to join the Washington Capitals and continue to work alongside Barry Trotz,” said Korn. “I look forward to working with all of the talented goaltenders in the organization and helping them improve and succeed on the ice. I want to thank the Nashville Predators for a great 16 years and wish them the very best in the future."

As for Olie, he will remain within the Caps organization, but no word on what he will be doing. Kolzig, who lives in Tampa, wants to spend more time with his family, and, for those of us that know about Kolzig's personal life, he has good reason.

Per Caps PR:

“I have known Olie for many years and have a great appreciation and respect for the way he views the goaltending position. We will continue to discuss the best way for him to remain with the organization while doing what’s best for his family.”

It will be very interesting to see how Holtby's game improves from last year. Under Oates' system, Holtby was set back too far in the crease and he never got comfortable. Most people were blaming Kolzig for that, but he and Holtby did work well together. With Trotz's understanding of how Korn works, Caps fans could be in a for a nice surprise.

More to come...
