Bob Gainey has informed Pat Hickey of the Montreal Gazette, that he's had some preliminary discussions with his unrestricted free agents, but won't have any of them signed before the draft.
Remember when
Alex Tanguay was told that another priority was keeping Gainey from serious negotiations with him? Well it appears that priority isn't Mike Komisarek, or Alex Kovalev, or even
Saku Koivu.
It's quite obvious the Canadiens intend to make a major splash on draft day-- leading to major speculation that Bob Gainey will pull off a blockbuster trade.
AMEN!
Five years of criticism for lack of an aggressive strategy, and utter failure to lure unrestricted free agents despite better offers than rivals have been handing out, could all be put to bed with
Vincent Lecavalier (or someone of his stature) being traded to the Canadiens.
As I met with many of you just a couple of weeks ago, my belief was that this was precisely why no one had resigned to date with the Canadiens. Here we are, two days from the draft, and it's been confirmed that no one will be signed until afterwards.
You shouldn't be all that surprised; the Canadiens have the most available cap room, as well as the most amount of vacancies to fill as they please.
Speaking of vacancies, so long to Don Lever, and Ron Wilson of the Hamilton Bulldogs. We'll get to Doug Jarvis in a moment...
Many people saw the firing of Lever as another unprofessional/unclassy move by GM Bob Gainey. Though it's unfair to be fired over the phone (without being given a reason) people need to realize this is the business of pro-sports, where life-expectancy is shorter than in any other job. Of course the story that came out in the Hamilton Spectator, speaking of Lever's frustration with the Canadiens, was written with direct intention of having fans react negatively to Bob Gainey's professionalism.
If Don Lever wants some reasons he should call Pierre Boivin. Boivin was the one who insisted on hiring a French-speaking coach with experience, and Lever didn't fit the bill. Once he was eliminated as a possibility to be the head coach in Montreal, it was up to Jacques Martin to decide whether or not he wanted to retain Lever as an assistant. It seems logical to assume that the Canadiens would like to put a French-speaking coach with experience in Hamilton, one that could be a viable replacement for Jacques Martin should he fail to do his job accordingly.
As for Doug Jarvis, it seems obvious the Canadiens are finally prepared to have a former NHL defenseman take to the Montreal bench, though no one has formally been hired as of yet.
That's it...checking in from vacation is seriously taboo...but I can't be stopped...
Be back soon!
