So today was Bob Gainey's imposed deadline for the coaching staff to be completed. I'd imagine everything falls into place from that point forward. With the ownership bids being processed by George Gillett, and the draft rapidly approaching, there should be a lot happening with the Canadiens over the following two weeks.
In the meantime, one would have to assume Gainey has begun dealing with his free agents in order of priority.
It's believed that Kovalev and Komisarek are those priorities, and the talk around the hockey world has many wondering what the future holds in store for long-time captain,
Saku Koivu. I think it's unreasonable to automatically suggest that the Canadiens and Koivu will certainly part ways, though it seems to be a prevalent opinion among many right now. Which begs the question as to whether or not the Canadiens plan to retain
Robert Lang, who is still recovering from a devastating injury suffered halfway through last season.
As for
Alex Tanguay, it's believed he will be penned to a new deal before July 1st. With all these stars being up for contracts there hasn't been much discussion about
Mathieu Dandenault,
Francis Bouillon,
Patrice Brisebois,
Mathieu Schneider, and
Tom Kostopoulos.
The Canadiens will most certainly part ways with some of those guys, Brisebois being at the top of the list. Bouillon's future in Montreal seems uncertain, as does Dandenault's, but Kostopoulos and Schneider could very well be a part of the plans.
As for the RFAs, it remains undetermined as to whether or not any of them will be seen as priority signings before July 1st. I don't believe the Canadiens are particularly worried about Higgins, Plekanec or Latendresse being poached by another team, the draft-pick compensation might be well worth a pass on a ridiculous offer sheet.
Much more to come this week...
