Bob Gainey was more forthcoming than usual yesterday, as he addressed the press for the first time since hiring Jacques Martin to be the next head coach of the Montreal Canadiens. He divulged his intention to ink Komisarek to a long-term deal, one that has been formally offered to the young defenseman who's set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st. Gainey informed media members that decisions on offering contracts to Kovalev, Tanguay, and Koivu would have to wait until next week.

Why you may ask? Because it seems quite obvious that Gainey intends to do everything he can to bring an impact player or two to Montreal by the end of this weekend.

Rumors are out of control around the press circles gathered for this weekend's festivities. All seem to concur that Gainey has an opportunity to make a splash in the trade pool, though no one is willing to suggest his moves could very positively impact the immediate future of the Canadiens.

Gainey was clear in saying he intends to use his first round pick at number 18, and though the Canadiens would certainly entertain the opportunity to move up in the draft, they feel comfortable with the players who will likely be available when it's their turn to hit the podium.

Hold on to your hats...it's going to be a wild ride here in Montreal this weekend.

I'll check in later from the draft!
