So here we are…two-thirds of the way through the NHL’s version of a reboot and all that’s left are the UFA’s and trades. There are still numerous cards to be played…let’s just say the NHL’s GM's, Assistant GM's and coaches aren’t exactly booking fishing trips to James Bay yet.

On Shattenkirk…

All roads still point towards the worst kept secret here…the Rangers and Shattenkirk are, for all intents and purposes, engaged… Will it happen or fall apart? That is still to be seen. No doubt, NYR may have some stiff competition from the other NY area teams and Boston…and NY just got out of debt when they moved some big contract.

I am a HUGE fan of Anthony DeAngelo (who I feel is way underrated). The Rangers knew what they were doing here and they made a very sneaky smart play to get him included in their deal with the Coyotes.

On Duchene, the Islanders

The Avalanche want more than is being offered. (and who doesn’t want that) The problem here is they have burned some serious bridges with Matt, but from what I can tell has had enough already and won’t just be a good sport if he isn’t moved out.

The Islanders have gotten more and more frustrated and started talking to Montreal more regarding Galchenyuk, and many people are reporting the Isles are no longer in on Duchene.

Those people are ignoring the fact that there is very much a game afoot here…I am told Tavares wants his Team Canada buddy Duchene…and what John wants may just matter a little.

Also, Hamonic was never the key player in a deal for Duchene…So just because he was moved, hasn’t changed what Colorado is looking for..

Essentially….We are deep into the third act of “Duchene and the Island”, but we haven’t seen its last plot twist…not as of Sunday just before noon ET.

A team to look for? The Flyers.

Philly has the pieces that Colorado is asking for and Duchene and Giroux have been very complimentary when teamed up in Int'l competition.

On Radulov…

There is one reason and one reason alone why Galcheynuk isn’t on the the Avalanche, Wild, or Islanders right now…It’s the uncertainty surrounding Radulov…The Canadiens and Radulov are also “entwined a bit in a shaky engagement” but this one grows more uncertain over time…

Vegas, Dallas, San Jose, NY Rangers and LA are all starting to poke around and as of today, you can officially talk to UFA's. Before today, you could only ask a friend of friend to see if a girl liked you.

I know of what I speak because I have been passing MANY more notes in class from one friend to another over the past several days…

On Phaneuf…

There are a lot, and I mean A LOT of reporters in Canada trying to help out the Senators and Dion here, and I get it…but to be honest I really am not hearing all this “interest” there is in Dion.

On the Predators and Possibly Duchene..

Not happening I am told. The Preds love their defenders and why wouldn’t they. I know Nashville was in on Drouin, but they valued him higher than Duchene..

On Toronto and Tyson Barrie…

It could happen…According to those I talk to, it has ben discussed at least…

I personally feel Alzner or an “Alzner-style” d man would better fill their needs. Barrie is more along the lines of guys the Leafs already have in their system.

Today the Free Agency interview period continues. the Hall of Fame inductees will be announced today 3 p.m., and today at 5pm is the deadline for qualifying offers. Fun stuff!

Welcoming Brandon Smillie….

As a result of our writing contest, we welcome Brandon Smillie as an interim Habs writer. We are still looking for one more prior to the start of the NHL season, but for now we wanted to bring on Brandon, so that all you Habs fans out there would have a daily writer.

We have some more submissions to go through and I will be posting more guest Canadiens writers as well, but there is so much news in Montreal right now there can almost never be enough…
