So I asked you all here and on twitter to tell me your second favorite team. Almost 1000 of you took part in this very non-scientific poll. I have tabulated and done more math than I care to...ENJOY.
First the top ten...and thoughts..
#10. Edmonton 3.9%
Many of you said you grew up with the mighty Oilers of Gretzky. Edmonton's luster still shines.
#9. Toronto 4.1%
Perhaps the most polarizing team in the NHL. Well, not perhaps. You love them or you DESPISE them. Still, I would have guessed them to finish higher.
#8. Montreal 4.2%
Again. When I was a kid they were much more popular. They haven't won since '93. Probably the lowest they have ranked is right now.
#7. Phoenix 4.3%
Finishing ahead of Toronto...ah Karma. This is what I love about hockey fans. We love a good story and here is proof many of you out there are pulling for this fairytale.
#6. New Jersey 4.9%
Perhaps the first time ever the NJ Devils have ranked above the other two metro teams in a fan poll. Fans outside of NJ love them. Very shocked by this.
#5. Los Angeles 5.2%
Perhaps even more shocking. I am amazed by the amount of people in Canada who call the Kings their second team. They aren't jumping on the bandwagon here either.
#4. Pittsburgh 5.9%
Frankly for as hard as the Penguins are sold to us I am expected them to be #1 or #2. Is this a case of people don't want to root for the returning Cup Champion?
#3. Vancouver 7.8%
Definitely would have guessed them to be top ten, but a #3 finish is really strong and says much for the Canucks broad appeal. Perhaps the Luongo factor and the Olympics are helping them?
#2. Washington 10.5%
About where I would put them. They are dominant and have star power. Hard to not pick a Caps game when sitting down with Center Ice.
#1. Chicago 16%
The Hawks, at 16% are the overwhelmingly the #2 Team for the NHL. I am surprised buy this. Also kind of shocked how many people mentioned the Hawks having the coolest jerseys in the NHL as a part of their decision.
Ranking the Rest.
#11. Philadelphia - usually higher.
#12. Nashville -wow. very pleased by this
#13. Tampa -Double wow
#14. San Jose - great team
#15 Colorado -carry over from Sakic/Forsberg
#16. Anahem - Cup winners
#17. Detroit - Cup Winners...would have thought higher.
#18. Calgary - down year
#19 Buffalo - about where I would put them. Best local area fans
#20 Boston - lower than I thought
#21 Dallas - higher than I thought
#22. NY Rangers - so many big population areas hate them
#23. St Louis - about right
#24. Ottawa - REALLY low for a Canadian team. Shows why they got so little support in Cup Run.
#25. Minnesota - Definitely the most loved team locally and ignored nationally.
#26. NY Islanders - down times.
#27. Carolina - tough year
#28. Columbus - non-descript. Nash not enough
#29. Atlanta - very down
#30. Florida - no stars
