There is an epic debate brewing. Bubbling up under the surface.
Want to know why you haven't heard more about the re-alignment? It is December after all. The NHL Board of Governors is about to have the meeting that was supposed to determine how to get Winnipeg into the division they belong. The Red Wings were supposed to be moved East. All that was coming for Christmas....or not.
It now appears the NHL will vote to....not re-align yet. Why not? Is spending all those Winter days in Florida and Carolina a selling point to Jets players? Nope. It has to do with the Coyotes and great uncertainty. I am told the Governors have a strong feeling a team from the West could be heading East on its own and really launching into this potentially damaging debate right now...well, no one wants to alienate anyone if it isn't needed. The NHL needs all hands on deck coming into the summer CBA talks.
But the real story may be laying in the weeds...
This past week GTA Sports and Entertainment announced they were building $300M, 20,000 seat in Markham, Ontario (an hour north of Toronto). GTA is fronted by Graeme Roustan, a Montreal native who owns Bauer...The NHL "knows him" pretty well..
Meanwhile in Quebec...The Arena is getting built and there are sources who tell me the NHL has given its approval and wink-wink, nudge-nudge...
Parts of this were discussed today on XM "The Hockey News Radio Show" with Adam Proteau and Jamie Shalley. I definitely recommend checking out the show.
