Tales of a Miserable 50 Goal Scorer: Could He Be Available? Should He Be?

I can't imagine this has been a year Alex Ovechkin wants to remember. And honestly, it should have been. From the Olympics in Russia to his soon to be 50 goals....who could have imagined that rumors would be circulating that Ovechkin might actually be available this summer?

The NHL has NEVER had a player who scored the most goals in the NHL and end up with the worst +/-. Never. AO has 49 goals and 74 points and is a -35. Only Steve Ott sits worse in +/- at a minus 37 and almost all of that came on the Sabres. Ott is on the Blues now and his +/- could easily improve past AO.

So Ovechkin has 74 points. 36 of those points are on the power play, so yes....that means Ovechkin has been on the ice for 73 goals allowed even strength. That is a staggering number.

The Capitals, as a team, are only a -14. You could argue Ovechkin plays a lot of ice, but in previous years his +/- in the last 5 years have been +2, -8, +24, +45, and +8. This year he is -35.

But can you trade him?

I honestly don't see how you can trade away a Superstar. The Capitals building is full of #8 jerseys. I would guess there are 5 times more AO stuff sold then ALL other capitals players past and present combined. He is the Caps. You will never get fair value. Never.

But can the Caps win with him?

They have in the past. In the regular season at least. This situation is completely bizarre and may require a complete overhaul of the GM, coach and more to turn AO into a team player. It really doesn't make any sense. There is no more dynamic a player in the game today. He JUST won an MVP!?!?

What do you think?
