GM Jim Nill opened up cap space by buying out Niemi this morning and that was done for a specific purpose, as the Stars acquired defenseman Marc Methot from the Vegas Golden Knights this evening for a second round pick in 2020 and goaltending prospect Dylan Ferguson.

According to Stars beat writer Mike Heika, G Antti Niemi will be placed on waivers for the purpose of a buyout from the club. The Stars save $3 Million on the cap by buying out the final year of Niemi's deal.

The Stars had several things in the works over Draft weekend that were still on the table as they left Chicago and may have bought out Niemi to open up space to hunt for another veteran defenseman.

Interesting to see how this plays out in terms of the Goalie FA market...
