First off, in Toronto people need to remember that the Leafs made a bunch of changes this summer, especially on the defensive end, and teams that make these kinds of changes ALWAYS come out of the gate slow. Team chemistry in the NHL takes time. It is not surprising to see teams that made very few off season changes get off to a quicker start.

Yes, the pressure is on in Toronto. Especially when you consider that the #1 pick is gone for next season. But you need to remember that they did get a player for that #1 pick. Phil Kessel is coming. Those calling for a trade need to remember that Burke has already made that trade and the best forward on this team is coming.

Enter J.S. Giguere. It is no secret that Brian Burke loves Giguere, and now there are rumors swirling that the Leafs are considering dealing for the netminder. It makes some sense given the early goaltending woes in Toronto. As I have said before, young teams in the NHL that are having success with this style are doing so by taking advantage of their speed and their goaltending.

I really feel that Burke believes that the Monster is that goalie. He will give him some time to get healthy and show what he can do before going after Giguere or perhaps Josh Harding.

Also remember that Burke's Ducks teams and Wilson's Sharks teams were always slow starting teams that built throughout the season.

Marc Savard

There is a great deal of stuff going on in Boston. The Bruins have felt the loss of Kessel and they have also had issues internally as they have struggled out of the gate. The Bruins will get it together, and they have also tried to go down the negotiation path with Savard, who will be a UFA this summer. And a big one.

One team that is out of the gate fast is the LA Kings. The Kings are still in need of a scoring forward and it is obvious that the Kings know this as they have been involved with trade talks with every major forward that has been dealt or been discussed to be dealt.

I also have heard rumors that the Leafs have interest in Savard as well.

Kostitsyn Update

Not a ton of news here, but the market is out there and right now this is a case of the Canadiens setting a pretty high price to see if anyone will bite. Right now, the Canadiens may be asking too much, but they should be asking too much. There are teams out there that are interested and teams out there are starting to get a bit more desperate.
