Debate: Deadline Coming...Win Now, Risk All or Slow Build, Hope?

Happy Super Sunday. For a Philadelphia Sports fan this Super Bowl is about as bad as it gets. A New York Team or a Boston Team?

So I will be working the phones today and not attending any parties. Fact is, even if my team was in the game itself, there is just WAY too much going on right now to even think about sitting around, eating nachos, and drinking a cold one....(well I can think about it...)

Today a rumor making the rounds on the internet is Rick Nash and the Jackets #1 to Vancouver for Cory Schneider and Mason Raymond. This is, of course, absurd. It is much more likely we'd see either Nash OR the #1 straight up for that combo, but even that is not likely. Nevertheless, one thing for certain is that the Columbus is receptive to offers.

Yesterday the highly respected John Shannon from Sportsnet confirmed having talked to a relative of Nash's on the possibility that Nash would be willing to consider waving his no-trade clause. He confirmed it as possible. There you have it. Our official big domino of the deadline does appear to be Rick Nash.

The Great Debate Question..

As many of you know I am working on a book with "Great Hockey Debates (as Solved by the Readers of Hockeybuzz.com, Pro NHL Writers, Players, and Great People of the NHL)"

In this book I am compiling the great questions of our game and I am looking for a release currently in 2013. For the book I will use these questions I have asked on the blog and publish the best comments from you guys on each side of the argument. I ask some of the questions a few times a few years apart to see if attitudes have indeed shifted.

This question is my favorite to ask of all, because it is so apt for the time of year and deeply rooted in why we all love to talk rumors in the first place. It is also incredibly timely for Super Bowl Sunday....and here it is.

Would you rather your Team risk all and go for one glorious shot at the Stanley Cup, fully knowing that the team will suffer the years following, OR have your team build a highly competitve team which is always going to be in the playoffs and may one year have all the bounces, luck, hot goalie, etc happen to win a Cup?

We have seen both ways win over the past two years.

Two years ago the Hawks risked all and won a Cup, only to fall back after having to gut their champion team. They suffered one year down and have returned to being a good team again, but not a Cup favorite. (Tampa did this as well and it took them much longer after going for broke to get back)

Last year we saw Boston win it. Boston has been competitive for the most part in each of the last several few years, but last year they got Conn Smythe Trophy goaltending, and the chemistry just came together. As such, they took the big prize. The Bruins are back this year and are maybe even better....Anaheim was a team like this too for many years..

This is a question which in many ways defines the direction a team goes at the trade deadline...and this deadline more than ever, because we have teams with money and pending UFAs with impact available.

So let's hear what you want in the comments and remember the best comments have a chance to be published along with comments from some of the most famous people in the sport.

Since I love doing polls as well, please take a second and answer the poll question...even if you don't wish to comment in the thread. (remember the rules of commenting on the website as set forth...be on-topic and respectful of others. With traffic increasing every day we have just brought on some more referees to help make the comment threads solid.)
