Could Satan return to the NHL?

A few weeks ago, rumors surfaced that Miroslav Satan would return to the NHL next season after spending the last two years back in Europe. The New York Islanders appear to be the best fit, both then and now. Satan still has a residence on Long Island and there is a scoring line role to be had with the free agent departure of P.A. Parenteau.

Officially, the 37-year-old Satan remains in limbo. However, Lubomir Visnovksy suggested in a recent interview that Garth Snow is confident Satan will be an Islander next season. A return to Long Island for Satan could also help convince Visnovsky to withdraw his grievance over his recent trade from Anaheim to the Islanders.

Satan scored 10 points in 13 playoff games for the Bruins in 2010. He has spent most of the last two seasons in Slovakia with Slovan Bratislava as well as a short stint in Russia with Dynamo Moscow. He won a championship with Slovan last season, ranking fifth in the league in regular season scoring and leading all players during the playoffs.

Slovan is slated leave the Slovak league this season and join the KHL. The team has already returned to action, playing yesterday in the first game of the third annual European Trophy tournament (which runs intermittently until December). According to reports from Europe, Slovan has left the door open for Satan to return. However, it looks like a return to the NHL is his first preference.

Satan, who will turn 38 in November, has scored 363 goals and 735 points in 1,050 NHL games. He had the strong playoff run with the Bruins two seasons ago but had shown signs of slowing down. His last 25-plus goal season was in 2006-07 with the Islanders. Even so, if Jaromir Jagr could make a solid return to the NHL at age 39 last year, why not Satan?

More to come.... stay tuned!
