These deals were part one of the plan. The Leafs have obtained stars on D and in Goal by acquiring Giguere and Phaneuf.

But every source tells me he is not done at all...

It seems entirely plausible the next part of this plan is to take on cap space from other teams in order to get prospects and picks. Next the Leafs can send players to the minors to save cap space.

The Leafs will likely take on cap space from LA, NY Rangers, Philly depending on who needs space for Kovalchuk this coming week.

Also, I am told the Flames are in on Kovalchuk in full force now.


Another source tells me the Leafs are also working on possibly moving Alexei Ponikarovsky to the Penguins to play with Malkin.
