What a Difference a Year Makes

It makes a 40 year old goalie change zip codes.

When I told my husband that Dwayne Roloson was the Islanders new free agent pick up, I got what I expected. A mild tirade. I basically understand where he’s coming from. His biggest concern is his age and the possibility of injury. Certainly there are many veteran goalies that are mature, but the odds are stacked against them.

On a personal note, I was happy to see Garth sign someone that is too old for me to have given birth to. Bonus for me. There are so few of them in the room.

There was no real big splash today at the Islanders. I’m glad for that. I really didn’t want to see the Swedish Double mint twins on our roster. (Not that I know or think that was even a possibility.)

While he did sound reflective, it wasn’t the Ryan Smith tear-fest of the past. What Roloson did echo is what I have been saying all along. This is a tough business from an emotional standpoint.

“If they would have given me that extra year, I definitely would have signed it. The second year is what I really wanted. We gotta move forward. Unfortunately I’m not coming back to Edmonton. Time to move on. It’s the ugly side of professional sports that a lot of people don’t understand. Pick up and move to the next chapter in the book.”

“I’m glad things worked out the way they had today. It’s part of the game. It’s part of the game. When you’re looking in and you see the dollars, and you see what the guys are doing for a living, it’s all great. But this part of it is a lot tougher than people can imagine. But as a professional you learn to deal with it and it’s time to move on.”

I’m sure there were 100 things running through his mind when he said this.

I didn‘t know about this conference call because I didn‘t receive an advisory and I don‘t know where they came from, but a few of our NY Media were on the conference call including Newsday‘s Greg Logan. He asked if there would be a sense of competition with Rick DiPietro, as Dwayne and Rick are actually quite familiar with each other. “It’s a friendly competition but it doesn’t matter. It’s the coach’s decision who is going to play at the end of the day.”

I’m sure Scott Gordon will be happy to hear that.

Greg then asked what my husband was thinking. “You’re going to be 40 years old, where do you feel you’re at in terms of your career and your longevity.” (Okay, that was a lot nicer than he would have said it.)

For me, I was fortunate or unfortunate I didn’t play a lot when I first started in the league. I didn’t play a lot until I got to Edmonton.” Dwayne feels he doesn’t have the mileage on his body that other goalies may have. Nice theory Dwayne. “Physically, I’m still healthy, and knock on wood I’ve only had one injury that kept me out of some games.”

Until he gets to the Uniondale ice I’m sure. I don’t know. I’m a little worried about this move. Personally, I wanted Clemmensen, but my vote doesn’t count. Besides, he took a 3 year deal in Florida.

So the entire day that everyone waited by the computer and the radio and all the Islanders fans have to show for it is … Dwayne Roloson. I guess it could be worse. Garth is going to make us wait around for our real Christmas in July present -- an enforcer.
