Presidential Debating

The Islanders fell to the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 in Overtime last night. Despite the loss the team has gone 3-0-1 in their last four contests. Baby steps in the right direction. The big news that came out over the weekend is how the team’s new owners want to structure their front office.

On Saturday, Newsday reported that new owner Jonathan Ledecky is looking for a “big name” in the industry to take the reigns as the team’s president. Ledecky has been talking to people throughout the league and the Newsday article mentioned Pat Lafontaine, Brad Richards and Dale Tallon.

What is more interesting is the comments made by former Islander Kelly Hrudey on Hockey Night in Canada this past Saturday. He stated that Ledecky has reached out to the likes of Wayne Gretzky and Luc Robitaille to get their feedback on how to move this team forward. Hrudey also stated that he has been contacted by the new owners as well as numerous other Islander alumni to get their feedback on the team and what direction Ledecky should take it. This has all been going on since the first day the new owners took control of the team. We have reached out to Pat Lafontaine for comment. We also contacted Kelly Hrudey and we hope to have him on the podcast soon to discuss this.

I wrote a few weeks ago that Ledecky had a list and it appears now he is checking it twice. If nothing else, this is encouraging. Look, we all want them to clean house right now but as I have mentioned the best options may be currently employed elsewhere.

We all know this team needs a new direction and new leadership and if Ledecky is talking to the likes of Gretzky and Robitaille and names like Dale Tallon are coming up, I think this team will be just fine moving forward. The only issue is getting to the offseason. I don’t want to give up on this season but I don’t want Garth Snow doing anything without the approval of his boss.

This team as it’s currently constructed is still terribly flawed but at least it has seen some results the past week. I still can’t see them getting back in the mix for the playoffs without major changes and when those come will be anyone’s guess.
