It never is a dull moment in Islander country. Just when you think their is some down time, something new pops up and it is always a good read. Bloomberg News reported today that the New York Islanders are “considering” a move to Queens with the help of the New York Mets.

The article quotes people with knowledge of the discussions stating the teams have discussed a potential new arena in Willets Points that would be connected to Citi Field. This would be a potential ideal option for the Isles if a “series of hockey-specific improvements” can’t be agreed upon between the Isles and their current home, the Barclays Center.

The article goes on to rehash a lot that we already know. They cite the fan experience at Barclays and cite attendance being lower in Brooklyn, We all know that based off the size of Barclays Center, this would happen. The article also said that all parties declined comment on the story.

Ok let’s all digest this. We have all heard about the Willets Point pipe dream for years. We have all wanted this project to work because it always made the most sense. The commute to Queens would be so much easier for fans coming from Long Island. There are still plenty of rail options as well and fans would be able to tailgate again. You would also have a brand new state of the art arena without thousand of obstructed view seats.

Until we actually hear something from the Islanders we shouldn’t go crazy. New Islander owner Jonathan Ledecky just spent an entire session with the media explaining how he wanted the Barclays Center to work for the Islanders. Could this story be a way to put some pressure on Barclays to make the necessary changes to improve the fan experience for Isles fans?

Right now I will label this story as interesting. We have heard this rumor so many times that it just seems to always be lying below the surface. I think it is all something we want to happen but until we hear something from the Islanders or the Mets, this is a story that makes for a compelling read during the middle of a slow news cycle.
