Today we launch our offseason report cards breaking down the entire roster of the 2016/2017 New York Islanders. When we mean the entire roster, we mean everyone, I never thought I would have to do a Kellen Jones report card but that will be coming later on. We are doing these in numerical order so we kick it off with number one, Thomas Greiss

Greiss played in a career high 51 games for the Islanders and finished the season with a 26-18-5 record. Following the political exile of Jaro Halak to Bridgeport, Greiss was rewarded with a three year contract extension averaging out to 3.3 million dollars per season.

While Greiss did have strong stretches of play, he was over used by interim Head Coach Doug Weight and his play suffered with an exhausting workload. This was in part to the organization having no faith in “backup” goalie J.F. Berube and the stubbornness of Islanders General Manager Garth Snow to not recall Jaro Halak. This lead to some numbers for Greiss that were average. Greiss finished with a 2.69 goals against average and a .913 save percentage, neither of those numbers blow anyone away. If you dig deeper, Griess’ save percentage fell to .880 when the team was shorthanded. This was indicative of the team’s struggles with special teams throughout most of the season.

I do think Greiss was better than these numbers indicate. The way the organization handled the goaltending during the 2016/2017 was deplorable and it directly affected all three of the teams’ net minders. I know the stats don’t jump out at you, and he certainly wasn’t the goalie that carried the Isles to the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals in 15/16 but I still believe that he wasn’t average. So with that being said my 16/17 grade for goalie Thomas Greiss is a B-.
