Wow! We usually have to wait until the Free Agent Frenzy actually begins before the names start flying around the league. Definitely not the case this year as the GMs have given us all a bonus day to go alongside one of the best NHL holidays.
We had a day full of signings, trades and trade rumors! All three tend to make hockey fans weak in the knees. The good news is that it will only get better tomorrow as names start to fly off of the shelves at an even more impressive rate. Look at it like the NHL’s version of black Friday...the general managers are the shoppers camped outside the shops hours before the doors open at noon, while the players are those video game systems and Tickle Me Elmos that every kid wants.
We actually got the ball rolling here in Pittsburgh Monday, as the Penguins signed Craig Adams and Bill Guerin. They also made headlines again today when they decided that they probably couldn’t fit Mike Zigomanis under the cap after yesterday’s moves.
I am not sure what to expect from the Penguins tomorrow. Last year at this time they were trying to get Marian Hossa locked up long term, but went into the start of free agency without making any big moves. Their first moves were not all that sexy. While waiting for the Hossa decision, Ray Shero inked Mark Eaton and Pascal Dupuis to multi-year deals. They finally made a bit of splash on the second day after Hossa decided to go to the Red Wings and signed Evgeni Malkin to a contract extension and locked up Brooks Orpik.
Ruslan Fedotenko, Rob Scuderi, Hal Gill, and Petr Sykora will make the headlines this year. Which pieces of the Stanley Cup puzzle will return, which will leave? It is going to make for some serious intrigue over the next few days to be sure.
The team has known for about a week that Scuderi was going to hit the market and see what teams are offering. It is also widely known that if he is to return, it will have to be for a significant discount. Teams desperate to add a steady shut down defender are expected to offer upwards of $3.0 million per season. Will the actions of Scuderi’s teammates influence him? Will he take less? We will see.
"It's been on my mind, but I'm not obsessed with it," Scuderi told the Tribune Review in Pittsburgh. "I'm trying to enjoy it. I mean, it's nerve-wracking, but I'm not consumed by it and I won't let it bother me."
Ruslan Fedotenko’s representatives have been meeting with the Penguins, but the two sides were not able to hammer anything out. I am curious to see what sorts of offers he receives, as he put himself back on the radar with a strong performance down the stretch and during the playoffs. However, there isn’t an Evgeni Malkin on every team to feed him in the slot. Money talks though and the Penguins do not have much of it.
Overall, tomorrow is going to be a very entertaining day and I like the rest of you am very much looking forward to it. Who knows, we may even see Petr Sykora re-signed! Messages were flying around earlier stating that he was still an option for the team.
Until the morning...get some rest folks. You will need it to keep up with all of the action in just under 10 hours...
