Aaron Ekblad Granted "Exceptional Player" Status: First Since Tavares |

The decision came down moments ago, as Bob McKenzie tweeted away. Aaron Ekblad, a recently turned 15 year old defenseman from the Sun County Panthers, will be eligible for the 2011 OHL Draft, and will likely go first overall.
The 6'3, 185 lb blueliner could likely be playing in the O already, with skills and smarts beyond his years. He has a howitzer of a point shot, skates as well as anybody, and quarterbacks the powerplay like a veteran leader.
He's known for standing up for himself and his teammates on the ice, and has a quite reserve about himself.
I was lucky enough to see Ekblad last October against the Cambridge Hawks, and I can say with all honesty, this kid will likely be a Top Five pick come 2014.
The first time to happen since John Tavares in 2005, Ekblad will begin his OHL career a year early, come September. Did I mention Tavares and Ekblad are the
only players to ever be given that approval?
Food for thought, hockey fans.
