The Montreal Canadiens announced today that 19 year old rookie defenseman Victor Mete will be attending Canada's National Junior Team Selection Camp for a chance to make the roster for the 2018 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship tournament.

Marc Bergevin and the Canadiens are doing the right thing here by Mete. I remember a couple years ago when the Oilers didn’t allow L Draisaitl to leave the team to compete for Germany at the WJC only to send him down after the tournament ended. I felt it was a ignorant move on the part of the organization.

To quote the above tweeted article from the official Montreal Canadiens site, Bergevin stated "We've made the decision to allow Victor Mete to join Team Canada's Selection Camp to give him an opportunity to participate in a very beneficial experience for his development. The World Junior Hockey Championship is a very elite and very competitive tournament, and this can be a very rewarding opportunity for a young player."

To see the Habs not make the mistake of holding back a bright, young player like Mete is encouraging. Mete’s ice time has gone up the last two games he actually played in (16:58 in Detroit then 17:04 in St. Louis) but he has been a healthy scratch for the past two games. Fans and pundits alike were wondering if the Canadiens would make him available and now they know.

I would go so far as to say Mete is a lock for Team Canada this holiday. He could likely see himself named to the leadership group and have a letter on his jersey. Mete’s speed, hockey sense, and puck handling ability will make him one of Canada’s best players in a couple weeks and I can’t wait to watch Canada’s quest for Gold.

Mete has appeared in 27 games for the Canadiens this year posting 4 Assists to go with a +5 rating while averaging 14:52 mins per game. He has produced a 51.0 CF% and 52.5 FF%.
