The Wild began Sunday with the first of their own "Final Four" (games that is) in Mo-Town which is currently playing host to the NCAA's Final Four (basketball).
First of all, I applaud the Wild's effort against the Red Wings. Really, the Wild aren't even in the same league as the Wings, but, somehow, managed to hang with them almost to the very end, thanks in large part to the, once again, outstanding playing of Backstrom.
I listened to the first part of this game on the radio. During that time, the local broadcasters referred to Detroit potentially having looked at obtaining Backstrom at the trade deadline. Now, I don't know the salary cap details of what that would have looked like, but the Red Wings will rue the day they did not go after and obtain one of the most outstanding goaltenders currently playing in the NHL. Detroit's goaltending is quite suspect this year and unless they turn it around on the goal line, some team will eventually beat them and the Wings will NOT repeat as Stanley Cup champions.
Notwithstanding, Hossa virtually ended the Wild's hope of a third straight berth in the post-season. With that shot and goal, the Wild's season may have all ended with the exception of the last three games which will be more about pride than anything else. Perhaps Harding harding will see some action and be showcased for eventual trade-bait come draft day.
Next up, the Dallas Stars on Tuesday in St. Paul. Will this be Modano's last appearance in the State of Hockey? We will make sure to ask. However, I suspect that it may not be; especially given the prospect of, perhaps, playing for his country one last time in next year's winter Olympics, provided that Brian Burke allows someone of his advanced age onto his squad which he has been quoted as saying will the youngest of all at the 2010 games. Time will tell.
With the Ducks losing in regulation to San Jose, there are no other games of consequence to the Wild until Tuesday evening including Chicago at Nashville, L.A. at Edmonton and St. Louis at Phoenix.
