As so many people had predicted, Don Waddell and the Atlanta Thrashers did indeed pick Evander Kane with the 4th overall pick Friday night…the 17-year old center that scored 48 goals and 48 assists last season with the WHL’s Vancouver Giants.

And all around Thrasherville there was much rejoicing!

Shortly after being welcomed on stage, Kane was told by his new GM, “You’re going to look good next to Ilya Kovalchuk”.

Waddell indicated that he feels Kane has a good chance of playing in Atlanta this fall.

This was a solid pick by the Thrashers tonight…not unexpected, but still a good choice. It certainly drew loud cheers and applause from those who gathered with me at TJ’s Bar & Grill in Alpharetta to enjoy the night’s festivities. Most Thrashers fans I know and have spoken to really look forward to watching this young man develop and play with the team.

Personally, as I’ve opined here before, I thought keeping the pick and not trading it away was the smart option for Waddell. And I’m very happy with the way he used it.

Now…looking forward to the second round Saturday, one player that is still available is Landon Ferraro, son of former Thrasher Ray Ferraro. TSN had the 5’-11” center ranked 26th. Last season he netted 37 goals and 18 assists in 68 games for Red Deer.

Atlanta’s got the 4th selection in round two, as well as the 45th overall, and Ferraro could be a decent pickup for Waddell…not just for his skills, but the name recognition doesn’t hurt either around here.

Other quick thoughts on the first round…I was glad to see the Islanders pick Tavares with the first pick, if for no other reason than it kept a riot from erupting in Nassau Coliseum… I thought the Kings made a very good choice with Brayden Schenn, not only because I think he’ll be a very good player for them, but also the look on Brian Burke’s face after he was chosen was priceless…and I was a bit surprised to see Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson fall to the 10th pick, although I’m sure Oilers fans aren’t too upset about that.

And how about that Pronger deal…did Philly give up too much in return for him?

Much more fun to come tomorrow as the NHL finishes up this year’s draft. But at least for now, Thrasherville is welcoming it's newest citizen... Evander Kane.
