This morning, the Atlanta Thrashers officially announced the hiring of Rick Dudley to be the associate general manager of the Atlanta Thrashers.

In a statement today, Executive Vice President and general manager Don Waddell stated, “We are pleased to announce the addition of Rick Dudley to our front office…he has had noted success at all levels as a player, coach and general manager, and his nearly 40 years of professional experience will certainly prove beneficial to our organization. His ability to both evaluate and develop talent is evident in the remarkable turnarounds in the Tampa Bay Lightning and Chicago Blackhawks, both with player acquisitions during his tenure”.

Indeed…I think one of the greatest assets he brings to Atlanta is his player evaluation skill. This will come in handy this weekend during the NHL entry draft.

However, as I opined in my previous entry, I still think there is something more to Dudley’s hiring then just being Waddell’s right-hand man. This is especially so considering the fac
t that he looked in to the vacant GM job in Florida… as was reported last week by Miami Herald sportswriter George Richards in his “On Frozen Pond” blog.

I simply don’t think that Dudley would leave a team like the Blackhawks…which looks like a solid Stanley Cup contender for the foreseeable future…in order to make a lateral jump to the Thrashers. Not unless he’s been told the head job would be his soon.

But…I guess only time will tell.

Regardless, the Thrashers were in need of someone like Dudley…someone who can bring a fresh, new perspective to the team and assist in building a solid lineup for the franchise.

Very good hire by Waddell and the Thrashers…one that would be made all that much better if indeed he’s been brought in to eventually be appointed the new GM allowing Don Waddell to assume his executive duties full-time.
