The 2009 NHL entry draft is now complete and so let’s have a look at what the Thrashers netted during this weekend’s activities in Montreal.

First, of course, there was the selection of Evander Kane with the 4th overall pick. The question now is will he have an immediate impact in Atlanta this coming season. To that question, general manager Don Waddell told AJC beat writer Chris Vivlamore, “That is our belief, that if he continues to get stronger in the next eight or 10 weeks, he has a very good chance to be with us.”

At this time, the Thrashers centers look to be Peverley, White, Reasoner and Slater. Peverly, White and Reasoner are currently under contract while Slater…a pending RFA…was given a qualifying offer ealier in the week.

Of course, Kane could be placed on the wing if he impresses enough during traing camp and preseason. Time will tell on that issue.

Regardless…this was a very solid pick and I’m looking forward to seeing the kid play when he does suit up in a Thrashers’ uniform.

Rounding out the draft for the Thrashers…

Round Two: The Thrashers obtained a pair of left wingers in the second round…with the 34th overall pick Atlanta took Carl Klingberg, a 6’-3” 205 pound Swede. Later in the round, with the 45th overall, they selected Jeremy Morin who has played with the U.S. U-18 national team. The native of Auburn, NY is 6’-1” and 198 pounds.

Round Four: Atlanta had no thrird-round pick, but had two in the fourth. With these selections, they came off the forward lines and took a goalie and blueliner. With the 117th pick, they went with Edward Pasquele who plays between the pipes for Saginaw of the OHL. The 120th overall pick, the Thrashers added to their defensive corps stock with 6’-2” 211 pound Ben Chiarot who plays with Guelph of the OHL.

Round Five: Cody Sol, the 6’-4” 215 pound defender who is a teammate of Pasquale, was the 125th overall draft selection.

Round Six: The Thrashers used their 155th overall pick on Jimmy Bubnick who plays for Kaloomps of the WHL. The centerman is 6’-2” and 194 pounds.

Round Seven: In the final round of the dratt, Atlanta again had a pair of picks. With the 185th selection they went with Levko Koper, the 6’-0” 180 pounder out of Edmonton, Alberta. The left winger playes for Spokane of the NHL. And finally, Jordan Samuels-Thomas finished up the draft for the Thrashers…being selected with the 203rd overall pick. He’s a 6’-3” 198 pound left winger out of Hartford, Connecticut and playes with Waterloo of the USHL.

Now, how many of these will develop into players that will see any time in the NHL or not will be determined by how they work and how their organization develops them…but for now at least, congratulation to these kids…as well as all of the other young men who were drafted this weekend…having just realized a life’s dream by being selected in the 2009 NHL entry draft.

You have your chance…now go make the best of it!
