The 2009 Stanley Cup Finals began at 8:00 eastern time Saturday night and less than 27 hours later the Wings found themselves up 2-0 on a very, very talented Pittsburgh Penguins team.
In game 1 the Pens outshot Detroit 32-30 and out-played the defending champs for much of the game…it didn’t matter.
They played the second game of the series 21 hours after game one ended. This should favor the younger legs of the Pittsburgh Penguins…but it just didn’t matter.
In game 2 the Pens outshot Detroit 32-26 and skated well again…again it didn’t matter.
Hossa is yet to score for the Wings, Zetterberg hasn’t notched a goal either… this too just doesn’t matter.
The Penguins have held those two at bay and allowed Franzen but a single goal…and once more it just doesn’t friggin’ matter!!!
It doesn’t matter because the Detroit Red Wings are indeed the Big Red Borg of the NHL and …resistance is futile.
See, even if you do find a way to contain Hossa and Zetterberg and Franzen…
oh my!…they’ll come at you with
Brad Stuart or
Valtteri Filppula or
Jonathan Ericsson or
Justin Abdelkader.
That’s right, I said Abdelkader…who was the 42nd overall pick in the 2005 NHL entry draft and had a grand total of four NHL games under his belt before joining his comrades during the second round.
During the third period of Sunday night’s game, Abdelkader entered into Pittsburgh’s zone alone…there were a pair Penguins with him as well as Fleury…it didn’t matter, he scored. And like the night prior, it gave the Big Red Borg a 3-1 lead.
He now has two goals in the series so far…which is two more than the NHL’s poster child for post-lockout recovery,
Sidney Crosby, has!
Amazing how they just keep producing these guys. And those they do not produce, they simply assimilate into the fold…see also,
Marian Hossa.
Detroit is now 14-4 in the post-season this spring. Which just makes you wonder…how in the hell did they lose four games? Really… it has to make you respect Anaheim all that much more for what they did in their playoff appearance…actually taking three games from Detroit in round number two.
But even as well as the Ducks played…it didn’t matter. Resistance is futile.
Entering into the playoffs some felt that
if there was
one major weakness in the Borg collective, it was between the pipes.
Chris Osgood finished the regular season campaign with a .887 SV% and a 3.09 GAA.
Turns out…that didn’t matter either.
Going into Sunday night’s game, Osgood had a 2.00 GAA during the playoffs…after the game, it got lower.
His saves percentage going into the game was .928 for the post-season…after the game, it got higher.
The team as a whole moves as one…operates as one…attacks as one…defends as one. I would not be at all surprised if the bathroom in their locker room is a 20-seater as they just seem to do everything as a unit!
The Penguins are not playing poorly… in fact I think they are playing quite well. Certainly Crosby, Malkin & Co. are more than capable of bouncing back from an OH-two series deficit. They are too talented, too skilled, too strong, too fast to be counted out…right?
Maybe…maybe not.
They are not down two games to none to just any average team. They are two games away from being repeat runners-up to The Big Red Borg.
And the more this series goes on, the more it becomes apparent…resistance is futile.
