Let ‘Em Talk, Don. As Long As You Don't Paint Yourself Into A Corner

The 2009 NHL entry draft is finally upon us and, as is the norm for this time of year, there are all kinds of stories flying around about general managers shopping around roster resources in an attempt to better their position in the draft.

Thrashers’ general manager Don Waddell is no exception here…admitting Wednesday that he allowing his ears to be tickled by those interested in his fourth overall selection in Friday night’s draft. One such ear-ticker is Toronto’s Brian Burke, who possesses the 7th overall pick…and would love to work his way down further to the front.

Even far enough down to possess John Taveres.

When asked if Burke had approached him, Waddell admitted, “We’re certainly going to look at the trade market, but we’ve had no serious offers…we have talked to everyone. He has a better chance of getting to No.1 if he already has the 4.”

This statement alone caused shudders to go down the spines of many residents in Thrasherville.

But really, no one should get too upset with D-Dub talkin’ it up with Burke or any other GM. That’s what he should be doing…even if for no other reason than to just try to get a feel for the market.

It’s kinda like my wife talking to me about how she would like for the family room walls to be painted a nice mustard yellow color. I can “listen” to her discuss it all day long…know what I mean?

Don should take the same approach that I do…nod the head politely as he listens to the suggestion(s)…say, “Uh-huh…yes, that’s a possibility” a few times…rub the chin as if contemplating it…then, in the end, change the subject.

“Look…is that a Hugh Grant movie on TBS, hon”?

Yup…Don can listen politely, then utilize the fourth pick for himself. With the talent that will be available at the time, he’s far less likely to go wrong.

So, I have no problem at all with Waddell talking up the issue with Burke, seeing that in the end I suspect he’ll do the right thing and not allow it to go further than just that…talk.

Or maybe that’s…hope…that he will.

Now, if you'll excuse me…I have to get back to painting the family room.
