The Dallas Stars dug an early 3-0 hole for themselves and were unable to climb out as they fell to the St. Louis Blues, 4-2, at Scottrade Center on Saturday night. The Stars fell to 0-2-0 on the young season, while the Blues improved to 2-0-0.

Over the first two games, Dallas has put 86 shots on goal but have only found the net twice. They notched one power play goal apiece in Friday's 2-1 home loss to the Vegas Golden Knights and last night in St Louis but have only scored one even strength goal thus far.

Jake Allen made 38 saves to earn the win for St. Louis. Jaden Schwartz led the offense with a goal and an assist. Carl Gunarsson, Joel Edmundson and Vladimir Tarasenko (power play) also scored for the Blues. Brayden Schenn and Alex Pietrangelo (coming off a two-goal game in the opener) notched two assists apiece.

The Stars scored twice in the third period but it was too little, too late. John Klingberg notched an early period power play goal (assists to Alexander Radulov and Devin Shore) that was answered a few minutes later by Tarasenko restoring a three-goal lead for the Blues on the power play. Scoring his first goal after missing the entire 2016-17 season, Mattias Janmark made it 4-2 with 6:49 left in regulation. Jason Spezza and Brett Richie earned the helpers.

Dallas drew no closer, however. Kari Lehtonen absorbed the loss in goal, stopping 17 of 21 shots.

The team lost injury-prone veteran forward Martin Hanzal to a lower-body injury midway through the game. He will be re-evaluated on Sunday.
