The Dallas Stars improved to 2-3-0 (2-1-0 at home) on the young 2017-18 season as they collected a 3-1 win over the visiting Colorado Avalanche at the American Airlines Center on Saturday night.

The Stars dominated a scoreless first period, stayed focused and went on to earn a win against an Avs team on the second half of a back-to-back set. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for Colorado.

Tyler Seguin led the way for the Stars, compiling his first career Gordie Howe Hat Trick on an early second period assist, a buzzer-beating second period power play goal and a third period fight with former Stars teammate Patrik Nemeth. Stars captain Jamie Benn (one goal, one assist) also enjoyed a multi-point game. Esa Lindell added a late empty netter for his first goal of the 2017-18 season and seventh in his young NHL career.

Ben Bishop earned the win in goal for Dallas, stopping 22 of 23 shots, yielding only an early third period tally by Matt Duchene (third goal of the season). Semyon Varlamov made 33 saves in a losing cause for Colorado.

After a scoreless opening stanza that saw the Stars outshoot the Avalanche by a 14-4 margin, Dallas broke through early in the second period. Working a 2-on-1 with Alexander Radulov, Benn finished off the opening-shift play at the 23-second mark for his second goal of the season. Seguin earned the secondary assist.

The skinny lead held through the middle stanza, during which the Stars held a 14-8 shot advantage (28-12 over the first 40 minutes). Finally, with time ticking down to the final second of the frame, Seguin wired a laser beam past Varlamov for his third goal of the season and a 2-0 Dallas lead. Devin Shore and Benn collected the apples. Dallas has scored on the man advantage in each of their five games to open the season.

Colorado drew back within a goal as Duchene scored at 1:26 of the third period during a delayed penalty on Dallas. The assists went to Tyson Barrie and Colin Wilson.

First-time fighter Seguin completed the Gordie at 3:59 of the third period with his fight against another unlikely pugilist in the 6-foot-3, 220-pound Nemeth. Not much landed as they grappled spun around and around in the right faceoff circle although several punches were thrown by Seguin and Nemeth eventually had his helmet removed. The AAC crowd got a big rise out of the fight, as did the Dallas bench.

Varlamov was pulled for extra attacker late in regulation. With time ticking down under 40 seconds, Lindell's empty-net goal iced the win for the Stars. Shore got his second assist of the game (fourth of the season) while Stephen Johns collected the other helper.

Third period shots were 11-8 in Colorado's favor; 36-23 overall in the Stars' favor.

With the win, second-tenure Stars head coach Ken Hitchcock earned the 783rd win of his NHL head coaching career. He surpassed the late Al Arbour for third on the NHL's all-time list.

The Stars are off on Monday. On Tuesday, they host the winless Arizona Coyotes (0-4-1) at the American Airline Center. Game time is 7:30 p.m. CDT.
