WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MEDAL GAMES SET

The gold medal game at the 2017 IIHF World Championships will pit Canada against Sweden. The match will be televised on NHL Network at 2:15 p.m. EDT. Earlier, at 10:15 a.m. EDT, Russia opposes Finland in the bronze medal game.

On Saturday, Canada rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the third period to explode for four unanswered goals in a 4-2 victory over Russia in the semifinals. Travis Konecny (10:13 TOI, two shots) earned his eighth and most important assist of the tourney, springing Nathan MacKinnon for the tying goal. Later, Sean Couturier (14:16 TOI) iced the victory with an empty net goal. Ryan O'Reilly scored the game-winner and then passed up ice to Couturier for the ENG. Mark Scheifele started the comeback with a goal early in the third period.

Canada captain Claude Giroux had three shots on goal and was plus-one in 12:57 of ice time. Wayne Simmonds had two shots and was plus one in 13:14. Brayden Schenn continued to be very sparingly used, skating just 6:44 over nine shifts. For Russia, Ivan Provorov was minus-two and played just 13:34 but skated 28 shifts and had five shots on goal.

In the other semifinal, Sweden and Finland were tied 1-1 at the first intermission before Tre Kronor pulled away with two goals in the second period and an extra insurance marker midway through the third period. Finland alternate captain Valtteri Filppula logged 20:02 of ice time and had one shot on goal. He also was whistled for his sixth minor penalty of the tournament.
