The WHL champion Brandon Wheat Kings were unable to overcome a 5-1 deficit against the QMJHL champion Rouyn-Noranda Huskies and went down to a 5-3 defeat in Memorial Cup round robin action in Red Deer, Alberta, on Saturday night.
Flyers defense prospect Philippe Myers scored what proved to be the game-winning goal for the Huskies, tallying a power play goal with six-and-a-half minutes left in the second period. The Wheaties actually scored first before the Huskies responded with five unanswered goals.
Ivan Provorov, the Flyers' first-round pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, was caught out of position on one of the Rouyn-Noranda goals and was minus-three at one juncture of the game. However, he had a strong third period, including a lovely stretch pass on a John Quenneville goal that cut the gap to two goals with 7:46 remaining in the third period. Provorov finished at minus-one.
Rouyn-Noranda plays the tournament host Red Deer Rebels on Sunday. The Wheat Kings return to action on Monday against the OHL champion London Knights.
