QUICK HITS: JULY 26, 2016
1) The Flyers have re-signed defenseman Brandon Manning to a two-year, contract at a $975,000 cap hit per season. The agreement averts an arbitration hearing scheduled for next week. Philadelphia now has all of its restricted free agents under contract for next season.
2) According to General Fanager, the Flyers will have approximately $1.04 million in cap space available at the start of next season. This is based on the current roster and an assumption that the team will carry 14 forwards, seven defensemen and goaltenders Steve Mason and Michal Neuvirth on opening night.
3) While not a factor this season, the Flyers will be compelled to expose a veteran defenseman to the expansion draft next summer. By that point, Manning will meet the criteria of both NHL games played and valid contract.
4) My reaction to the Flyers' four-year contract with Brayden Schenn is that it's right in the ballpark that most expected. The cap hit ($5.125 million) creeped above $5 million -- but not all that much -- because the deal involves pre-empting two seasons worth of unrestricted free agency eligibility (which always inflates cost). As long as he stays healthy and remains on the top power play unit, there is no reason why Schenn can not regularly approach last season's statistics as he reaches what, for most players, are the prime years of a year. He already has two 20-goal seasons under his belt in the NHL. Whether he can play the pace he did in the second half of last season over 79 games (remember that he will start next season on a three-game suspension from the NHL) but his aggregate totals are reachable.
5) Today in Flyers History: July 26
1989: The Flyers release veteran power forward Al Secord from his contract.
2000: The Flyers sign veteran forward Derek Plante as a free agent.
2007: The Flyers sign forward Jared Ross (two-way contract).
2012: The Flyers re-sign restricted free agent Jakub Voracek to a four-year, $17 million contract.
