Quick Hits: March 18, 2017

1) The Lehigh Valley Phantoms suffered a 4-1 home setback on Friday at the hands of the Atlantic Division leading Wilkes Barre/Scranton Penguins. A first period power play goal by callup defenseman Maxim Lamarche (assisted by Travis Sanheim and Mark Zengerle) opened the scoring but the Penguins scored four unanswered goals in the second and third periods. Alex Lyon stopped 28 of 31 shots before WB/S tacked on a late empty netter. Veteran offensive defenseman T.J. Brennan finished at minus-four on the night.

The venue switches to Wilkes Barre on Saturday for the return game of the home-and-home set. The Penguins now lead the Phantoms by five points. While the Phantoms still have a potent lineup, they have been downgraded somewhat in recent weeks due to NHL callups (Jordan Weal) and injuries (Taylor Leier's concussion, Robert Hägg's lower body injury).

2) The Flyers Alumni Team's rematch against the Penguins Alumni Team takes place on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Santander Arena in Reading, PA. Walk-up tickets are still available. The Flyers' lineup will feature the likes of Eric Lindros, John LeClair, Danny Briere, Brian Propp, Dan Carcillo, Paul Holmgren, Dave Brown, Bob "the Hound" Kelly, Todd Fedoruk, Ray Emery, Brian Boucher, Brad Marsh, the Watson brothers, Terry Carkner, Doug Crossman and more. Bernie Parent, Dave Schultz and Bill Clement will be the honorary coaches.

3) There are only a few guys who were on the Flyers Alumni team trip to Russia who will also be in Reading -- Joe Watson, Brad Marsh, Terry Carkner and my roommate throughout the trip, equipment manager/trainer Dave Culp -- but I am really looking forward to seeing them. That trip was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. My most memorable moment: finding myself in a small makeshift (but ornate) "hockey dressing room" in Red Square, helping Flyers Hall of Fame defenseman Watson lace up his skates before the shinny match we had there!

I can truthfully say that everyone on the trip was a great guy, including most of our guest players (especially Bobby Carpenter and Andrei Nikolishin). I wish there were a few more of the Flyers Alumni guys (Jeff Chychrun, Shjon Podein, Al Secord, Lindsay Carson and Alumni Team regular participants Freddy Cassivi and Chase Watson) coming along to Reading.

By the end of the trip, we were all glad to get home. I really missed my family, and getting back to spend time with my wife and kids recharged my batteries. Even so, in the weeks since returning, I've found myself missing the Russia trip group.

4) The Flyers resume practice at the Skate Zone in Voorhees, NJ on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. EDT. I will be on the way to Reading, so I will not be able to attend the practice. The Flyers host the Carolina Hurricanes at the Wells Fargo Center on Sunday evening.

5) A sad note: Ed Parvin Sr. recently passed away at the age of 82. The longtime south Jersey real estate agent and his family were close friends with dozens of Flyers players over the years as well as both Ed and Jay Snider. By all accounts, Ed was a devoted Flyers fan as well as a good man. Ed Parvin's son, Eddie, was a passenger in Pelle Lindbergh's car on the night of Pelle's fatal car crash. Ed Jr. survived and, after considerable hardship in the first few years after the accident, has been able to put his life back together.
