QUICK HITS: JUNE 10

1) The entire hockey world is in mourning today after the passing of the game's greatest legend, Gordie Howe. The father of longtime Flyers defenseman, Hockey Hall of Famer Mark Howe, was 88 years old. Gordie had a long struggle with dementia and stroke in his later years and had a rough time following the death of his beloved wife, Colleen. His legacy is forever secure as an iconic figure on the ice and a treasure off the ice who was as down-to-earth, kind, humorous, caring, family-oriented and caring off the ice as he was competitive and downright nasty in addition to being supremely skilled.

On behalf of the Philadelphia Flyers, our deepest condolences go out to Mark Howe and the rest of the Howe family on the passing of Gordie Howe. Gordie was a tremendous player and ambassador for the game of hockey. He was a true gentlemen and will be missed by all," Flyers president Paul Holmgren said in a statement released by the team.

Added Bob Clarke, “So many generations of players wanted to play like Gordie Howe. He was the ultimate professional hockey player."

2) Flyers defenseman Michael Del Zotto, lost for the season in mid-February due to a wrist injury that required surgery that had a rough six-to-eight week recovery time line has been back on the ice, skating and puckhandling. He posted the following clip on his Instagram account.

Feels great to be back on the ice. Mastermind @bvally_16 with great drills. #bellows #ntr

2) There are two spots open for players at the upcoming Flyers Alumni fantasy hockey camp in Atlantic City (August 19-22) before the camp is sold out. This year, the participating Flyers Alumni instructors and tournament coaches include Hockey Hall of Famers Bernie Parent and Mark Howe, along with the likes of Danny Briere and Flyers assistant coach Ian Laperriere. Other participating Alumni this year include Brad Marsh, Brian Propp, Andre "Moose" Dupont, Todd "Fridge" Fedoruk, Bob "the Hound" Kelly and Flyers Hall of Fame defenseman Joe Watson. 3) A website called Wallethub came out with a "study" to rank the "best" and "worst" NHL fans in U.S. markets, using a variety of seemingly half-baked criteria they purport to reliably measure fan engagement, spending loyalty and team success draw a conclusion that Philadelphia ranks 12th best in the NHL, behind the likes of Sunrise, FL and Newark, NJ.
