QUICK HITS: JULY 25, 2016

1) The Flyers and Brayden Schenn have agreed to a four-year contract, avoiding arbitration. The deal will carry a $5.125 million cap hit. Last-minute settlements have happened numerous times in Flyers history.

Twenty years ago, the Flyers settled an arbitration case on the day it was scheduled; actually with arbitrator Richard McLaren already on site. It took six hours of negotiation, but the two parties finally hammered out a deal and told McLaren his services would not be necessary. The player taking the Flyers to arbitration was goalie Ron Hextall, now the team's GM. Things have a way of coming full circle.

In 1998, a deal between the Flyers and Rod Brind'Amour was struck about an hour before their scheduled arbitration hearing. The next year, the same thing happened with Dan McGillis, who was $600,000 per season and at least a year in contract term apart from the Flyers before the two sides worked out an agreement shortly before the hearing.

2) The Flyers recently announced their schedule of nationally televised games for the 2016-17 season. The team will have 20 national TV games this season, including the annual Black Friday matinee game (vs. the Rangers this seaon, and shown on NBC) and the Stadium Series game against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Heinz Field on February 25. The full schedule is below:

3) Congratulations to Hall of Fame goaltender Bernie Parent, who tied the knot in a beach ceremony in Avalon, NJ, this past weekend. I've said it before and said it again. Bernie Parent lives life to the fullest. He is more or less the real-life version of the fictitious "Most Interesting Man in the World" character of TV commercial fame.
