HART MAKES CHL HISTORY WITH 2ND GOALIE OF THE YEAR AWARD

Flyers goaltending prospect Carter Hart has been named the Canadian Hockey League Goaltender of the Year for the 2017-18 season, becoming the first netminder in CHL history to win the award twice. Hart also set a Western Hockey League record this season by winning the Del Wilson Trophy (Western League goalie of the year) for the third straight year.

An automatic finalist for the CHL Player of the Year this season as the winner of the Western Hockey League's Most Valuable Player award, Everett Silvertips netminder Hart was in competition for the CHL's top individual prize with Quebec Major Junior Hockey League MVP winner Alex Barre-Boulet (Blainville-Boisbriand Armada) and Ontario Hockey League MVP winner Jordan Kyrou (Sarnia Sting). Barre-Boulet, an overager this season who turned 21 on May 21, took the prize.

During the regular season, Hart posted staggering statistics despite missing much of the early season due a bout with mononucleosis. He led the league with a 1.60 goals against average, .947 save percentage and 7 shutouts to go along with his gaudy 31-6-4 record.

Some context: Portland Winterhawks goalie Cole Kehler was second in the WHL with a 2.77 GAA. Among qualifying goalie, Victoria Royals netminder Griffen Outhouse was the save percentage runner-up to Hart with a .914 mark. Hart's WHL Finals opponent, Swift Current's Stuart Skinner was the regular season shutout runner-up with six.

By far, the WHL was the highest-scoring of the three CHL circuits this season. The league had 18 different players who scored 40 or more goals, nine players with 100 or more points and 23 players who topped 85 points.

Over the course of the 2017-18 season alone, Hart won his record-breaking third Del Wilson Trophy as the Western Hockey League's goaltender of the year. He grabbed a share of the league's all-time career shutout record (26). In international play, he helped lead Team Canada to the gold medal at the World Junior Championships.

In the WHL playoffs, the Silvertips reached the championship round before losing in six games to the Swift Current Broncos. Hart finished the playoffs with a 2.40 GAA, .921 save percentage, two shutouts and 30 saves of a combined 34-save shutout in a game Hart briefly had to leave due to illness.
