GMRF Acquires TVR - How Does This Shake Up Canes Blueline?

GMRF struck early once the freeze lifted and acquired Trevor Van Riemsdyk (TVR) from the Golden Knights. The price wasn’t that high either, as GMRF sent the Golden Knights his lowest of three second round picks, the 62nd overall pick in the upcoming draft. GMRF also received a 2018 seventh-round pick in the deal too.

TVR will have no shortage of trusted mentors to help him learn the Hurricanes system. He previously played with Pesce at UNH for two seasons. TVR also has played in Chicago/Rockford with Dahlbeck, Darling, Nordstrom, and Teravainen. I don’t think he will have an issue transitioning into Carolina.

There is some speculation that this move won’t be the final trade before the end of the week too. The most likely move is a young D and pick(s) for a top-six forward. The acquisition of TVR crowds a blueline that already looks to be competitive next season. The one person I think that became much less expendable is Dahlbeck.

He played with TVR in the 2014-15 season in Rockford before being traded to the Coyotes around the trade deadline. The two of them together help put a sound and competitive third pairing. Dahlback is listed at 6’3, and 207 pounds and TVR comes in at 6’2, and 190 pounds.

This may signify that Muphy will provide the depth role next season, as opposed to potentially being traded. This could mean that Fleury, Carrick, and McKoewn get another year to develop in the AHL with Bean in the WHL. There are some that believe all four could potentially be ready for a third pair role in the NHL.

While nothing is certain, I think McKoewn is the safest of all four. He is the only RHD of the group, so it would appear that a LHD could be more expendable. The one known thing is there is no lack of competition for spots on the Hurricanes blueline.

Pesce, Slavin, TVR, Dahlbeck, Murphy, and Hanifin will all be looking for a new deal next off-season. So, it is safe to say that they certainly will be hungry and playing hard next season. Add to the competition a handful of young D ready to make the jump to the NHL, and one can see how spots are limited. The blueline certainly is bright in Carolina.

The next few days should be exciting. This trade now leaves the Hurricanes with eight picks, five of which are in the top 73. GMRF has plenty of options heading into the NHL draft.

Who would you like to see GMRF target for a trade? Thanks for reading!
