Let’s get this straight, the media went to the morning skate in Calgary on Tuesday morning and got exactly what they were looking for.
Another foolish comment made by NHL bad boy wannabe
Sean Avery.
I have a little background in the media and know how this works. The media went to the rink looking for Avery hoping he would provide the television and print people with the perfect quote that would make SportsCenter must see TV and give headlines to sell newspapers.
I don’t think anyone expected Avery to seek out the media though and volunteer his opinion on Flames D-man
Dion Phaneuf dating Avery’s ex-girlfriend Elisha Cuthbert.
That’s what happens when you have an athlete starving for attention.
I have news for Avery, he’s kidding himself if he doesn’t think he was getting someone else’s (his words) “sloppy seconds” when he dated Cutherbert in the first place.
I have to be honest here though, if Phaneuf is getting what Avery calls “sloppy seconds” I guarantee you there are plenty of people lining up for thirds.
With that being said what Avery did is embarrassing to the NHL and is completely disrespectful to women.
What Avery said is nothing more than typical locker room talk. I’m not excusing it but it’s true.
It’s another case of boys being boys. Only difference is Avery appears to lack some common sense. You can’t say that on television man!
Save it for the ice where this type of trash talking takes place almost every shift.
The comments made by Avery are damaging to the Stars orgainzation and to the league. I find it hard to believe why a player would make such a comment. The fact that his comments were obviously prepared and rehearsed makes it even more puzzling.
I find it difficult to believe Phanuef is hurt by the comments made by Avery. I’m sure his initial reaction was this is another case of Sean being Sean. I have a feeling Dion will survive this ordeal!
Phaneuf is a big boy, he’ll have no problem moving on and continuing focusing on playing hockey.
This story is way more about who made the comments as opposed to what was said.
Chances are if these comments were made in Carolina where maybe two media people are in the dressing room this wouldn’t be a story.
It’s likely the media in several NHL cities are oblivious to the fact that Phaneuf is dating Avery’s Ex in the first place.
This still doesn’t excuse the fact that Avery is proving once again that he isn’t worth having on your hockey club.
This is why Dallas Captain Brendan Morrow and superstar
Mike Modano were upset when Dallas signed Avery in the first place.
I found it interesting that both Phaneuf and Avery are represented by Newport Sports.
Power Agents Don Meehan and Craig Oster represent Phaneuf and Super agent Pat Morris negotiates for Avery.
Notice that I didn’t say Morris represents Avery?
I think it’s safe to assume that Morris is disappointed and disgusted by the comments from Avery. It’s similar to being a defense attorney, you don’t condone the act but it’s your job to make sure your client is treated fairly.
That’s what I expect Morris to do once Avery has his little hoedown with NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell.
The worst part about
Sean Avery is that he drags other people through the mud with him. There is no way Morris will try to defend what Avery did, you simply can’t.
Same goes with Stars Co-GM Brett Hull who stuck his own neck out when he defended the signing back in July.
The problem with Avery is that he thinks after he speaks.
I’m sure this is a difficult position for Morris to be in. There is no way he wants to be associated with Avery during a time like this. I think it s perfectly fine for people to assume Morris has repeatedly given Avery advice and tried to help him numerous times in the past.
What do you do if the player refuses to take the advice?
You cut ties with them.
I’ve dealt with Pat Morris numerous times during my career covering the NHL and I consider him one of the best and classiest agents out there. He represents several quality people including
Ed Jovanovski,
Corey Perry,
Jay McKee,
Mathieu Schneider, and
Chris Pronger.
He doesn’t need Avery and the headache that comes with him.
I’m sure there is a part of Morris that wants to continue to help Avery and doesn’t want to turn his back on the player and I can understand that.
Firing clients would not be something new to Newport Sports who have let players such as
Jaromir Jagr and Alexander Mogilny go in the past.
Will Avery join this list?
Morris has never fired a client, but I have a felling that will change very soon.
It’s a shame that once again these are the stories that generate NHL news down here in the States. ESPN recently did a feature on Avery as he explained how he grew up playing with barbie’s and dressing up like a woman. Sources tell me Avery’s Father has told people this was a lie and his son was making this stuff up just to get attention.
Only if this kid could get it together. He’s a pretty good hockey player when he wants to be, but if he doesn’t shape up he’s going to wear out his welcome.
There are some people I have spoken too who say Dallas might have cause to void the remainder of his contract.
The bottom line here is that Avery didn’t commit an act of violence, he just made a stupid comment that is getting more attention than it warrants. Let’s hope the NHL gets through this quickly.
Rinks Rats!
Colorado forward
Darcy Tucker has a grade two MCL tear and could return in about three weeks.
The NHL is considering sending more teams to Europe open up the 2009-2010 season. I have already mentioned St. Louis is a strong candidate to start next year in Sweden.
Mats Sundin recently met representatives from the Chicago Blackhawks while the Hawks were playing on the west coast. The Rangers remain interested in his services.
Blues Clues!
First off to those who care, I apologize for being away the last several days.
I spent the American Thanksgiving holiday up in the mountains along the Oregon coast. The weather and scenery was incredible.
Chris Mason will start in net for St. Louis Wednesday night in Minnesota.
The Blues will honor
Keith Tkachuk for his 1,000 point milestone prior to the game Saturday night.
Paul Kariya is still not skating as he recovers from a very severe hip flexor. He seemed to be in good spirits when I spoke to him yesterday and was walking fine. He is not expected to need much practice time before he returns.
T.J. Oshie looked really good in practice on Tuedsay and there is an outside shot he’ll play this weekend. This was the first practice for Oshie since he suffered his high ankle sprain. He did skate on his own a few times.
Dan Hinote is still a ways away. He did skate on his own on Tuesday.
Brad Boyes offered up a room in his house for his buddy
Carlo Colaiacovo but Carlo didn’t want to leave Alex Steen alone in the hotel.
Goaltender
Chris Mason will be my guest Thursday night for my radio show Blues Buzz. The show broadcasts live from 6-7 at Johnny Mac’s sporting goods on Watson road ¼ mile east of Lindbergh. Blues Equipment Trainer Bert Godin will be on hand offering skate sharpening.
More to come,
