Former 1st overall pick Nail Yakupov intends to continue his career in the NHL, said his father, Rail Yakupov who is the general manager of Neftehimik team in the KHL.

"Of course, as general manager of Neftekhimik, I would be glad to see him on our roster. Nail wants to stay in the NHL. As a father I'm proud of his career, he has played 350 games in a league where everyone wants to play. I'm happy with every minute he spends in that league, and he gives it all he's got.''

Since being drafted 1st overall in the 2012 NHL entry draft the 24-year old Russian forward has played for three teams - The Edmonton Oilers, St.Louis Blues, and Colorado Avalanche.

His most successful season was during the shortened lockout year when he was making his NHL debut - 48 games 31 points (17+14) playing up to his potential which led many to believe that a star is on its way. Unfortunately for him, 30-ish mark in points has been the best he could produce. In final season with the Oilers, he managed to get 23 points.

The next year he played 40 with the Blues and managed to score only 3 goals and record 6 assists.

This past season with Avalanche he had a promising start but in the end, only good for 16 points and the Colorado team decided not to give him a qualifying offer to retain his rights.

On July 1st when Yakupov hits the free agency he won't be the most sought-after player but there is still interest in his services.

As many as three NHL teams have already expressed interest in a player that many believe still can be saved if used correctly in a potentially sheltered role.
