While the rest of Avs nation is waiting for who will be GM, I've decided to look beyond the now into the near future. I have a few questions for myself and for myself. Since I'm not a quiet guy and I'm almost pulling my hair out at the lack of news and instead of waiting for said questions to be answered, I want to hear your answers.
1. Who would you prefer to have take over the GM position?
2. would you have a two person GM team? What roles would you have each do?
3. How would try to clear cap space for this offseason?
4. If you only had money to go after two free agents who would you go after?
5. How would you solve the goaltending debacle?
6. Who would you draft with the third pick?
7. Are there any other players in the draft that have caught your eye?
8. Would you keep Granato as coach? If not, who would replace him with?
9. With a new coach, would a new coaching staff come with it?
Answers:
1. I would most certainly have Craig Billington take over GM duties. He's been traveling the world observing prospects. Who better to take over our rebuild?
2. It wouldn't be bad to have someone with Biller to deal with contract negotiations and player movement. However, Billington would be able to do that with the help of Lacroix I'm sure.
3. Clear cap space? Easy. Get
Darcy Tucker,
Brett Clark and
Marek Svatos off the books anyway you can. Then, put
Wojtek Wolski on the trade market. Since we'll most likely be able to draft an excellent center in Matt Duchene, Wolski is pretty expendible. He's got a pretty small contract and is in the last year of it. That, along with his offensive and shootout skills, makes him really easy to move. Doing that will give the Avs about $18 million in cap room to work with.
4. Mike Komisarek and either
Alexei Kovalev,
Martin Havlat or
Marian Hossa. Facts are facts,
Adam Foote is in the last year of his career. And while the Avs have replete defensive prospects, none of them are shutdown defenders. Komisarek would bring that. Enough of this Scott-Hannan-is-a-shutdown-defenseman crap, we need someone who's effective. The Avs also need a sniper to go on the second line. A finisher that Matt Duchene can pass to. I would go after a goaltender but none of the goalies available interest me. I would get a goalie through trade.
5. This one I've already answered in a previous blog. Trade Wolski and a few other pieces for a bona fide number one goalie. I still hope for
Kari Lehtonen but I'd take anyone as long as it's serious improvement over last year.
6. As I addressed earlier, I want Matt Duchene. He's a solid two-way forward who can shoot as well as he can pass. He's fast and responsible in all areas of the ice. As evidenced by his playoff production, it's clear he shows up when the game is on the line.
7. In later rounds, I'm looking at Edward Pasquale. Best goalie in the draft. That's all I have to say.
8. No way would I bring him back. I wouldn't fire him, I'd reassign him to coach in Lake Erie and bring Joe Sacco up to run our offense. As for replacing him, I'd still like Roy. This team lacked passion for most of last season and Roy would put passion back in the bench. There would not be a
Tyler Arnason on Patrick Roy's team.
9. New coach, new staff. No more Cloutier, please. Let Dave Barr and Cloutier go. Bring in Sacco and another assistant to be named by the new coach. Hire the coach and let him bring in someone he trusts.
