My second round picks

After an exquisite first round, 8 teams are gearing up for round 2. Here are my picks:

West

2. Detroit Red Wings vs. 8. Anaheim Ducks

After sweeping the Columbus Blue Jackets, the Red Wings move on to round 2. The only question that I still have for the Wings is goaltending but Osgood stepped up his game in the first round, making this team very dangerous. Anaheim powered by the San Jose Sharks in six games. They are getting great play from their forwards in all zones. They may be the strongest eighth seed in the playoffs since the 2006 Edmonton Oilers of which Chris Pronger was also a member. This will be a very entertaining series but I think the Red Wings get the edge here

3. Vancouver Canucks vs. 4 Chicago Blackhawks

One of the more interesting matchups for the playoffs. The Canucks have a very veteran group while the Blackhawks have a plethora of youth. Both attack with speed and rely heavily on defense and goaltending to make stops when needed. Given that the Canucks have had a little more time to rest and that they have Roberto Luongo that will give them an edge.

East

1. Boston Bruins vs. 6. Carolina Hurricanes

The Bruins are a load bearing down on their opponents. They are the only team in the playoffs the can play anyway that their opponents want. They can play physical, fast, offensive, defensive, etc. They are a team that nothing will be happening for a little bit and suddenly they break out with a great scoring chance. They have an awesome special teams and great goaltending. The Canes, though, have beaten Marty Brodeur which is a feat not to be taken lightly. They pulled off some late-game heroics to reach the second round. They have an explosive offense and very complete team. However, I don't think they have the depth to beat Boston in a series.

The dream matchup

If you don't know what matchup this is, then you're not a hockey fan. Washington Capitals vs. Pittsburgh Penguins. Crosby vs. Ovechkin. Semin vs. Malkin. This is a matchup that the NHL marketers love. The rivalry that's been building between the two teams is going to explode in this series. It will be a nasty series, but a very entertaining series. Both teams are built very similar. The only way I can see the Capitals beating the Penguins, though, is if Mike Green brings his game up to the next level.
