Updates to this blog will start at the top and go down. All times Mountain Standard Time

Adrian Dater also reporter that Sakic has told the Avs what he plans to do next year but the Avs have not released it to the media. Could they announce he's returning in the Matt Duchene press conference? I'll have more on this and the review of all Avalanche draft picks tomorrow evening.

After a break, I'm back.

Round 1 winners: New York Islanders and Anaheim Ducks
Round 1 losers: Philadelphia Flyers and any goalie prospect who attended

The rest of the order went Chris Kreider (NYR), Jacob Josefson (NJD), Jon Moore (CLB), Jordan Schroeder (Van), Tim Erixon (Cal), Marcus Johansson (Was), Jordan Caron (Bos), Kyle Palmieri (Ana), Dylan Olson (Chi), Carter Ashton, (Tbay) Simon Despres (Pit)

7:37: In my last update for the next few hours, the Montreal Canadiens draft Louis Leblanc. Will be back with more information.

7:29: Defenseman David Runblad is picked by the St. Louis Blues. John Moore and Schroeder stay on the board.

7:22: Pace is picking up as the Minnesota Wild pick Nick Leddy, a hometown kid.

7:17: The Ducks go off the board and choose the center Peter Holland. Don't know much about him.

7:08: The Florida Panthers select Dimitri Kulikov. A gamble but a wise one.

7:05: Zach Kassian goes to the Buffalo Sabres at 13. They just got whole lot tougher, which they need.

6:52: Islanders trade yet up to 12 by moving the 16, 77 and 180 and use it to select Galvin de Haan. Wow....

6:44: Nashville picks another stellar defenseman in Ryan Ellis. Ellis-Weber will be a force in the NHL. Watch out for Nashville.

6:35: MPS is off the board, to Edmonton.

6:27: Ottawa drafts Cowan. I'm afraid for him. If there's a bust in the first round, it would be him.

6:23 If Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson falls any further, look for the Avs to maybe get "the next Forsberg." Whatever the cost.

6:18 With the 8th pick, the Stars select Scott Glennie. This guy is underrated and will be a big-game player. Smart pick by Dallas.

6:10: The Leafs pick Nazem Kadri now. Good pick but is a year and a half away from making an impact.

6:03: Then Phoenix announces Oliver Ekman-Larsson as their pick. Will he get a chance to put on a real Phoenix jersey?

6:01: Columbus trades picks #16 and #77 to the Islanders in exchange #26 #37 #62 and #92

5:45: Don Waddell picks Evander Kane from the Vancouver Giants. The perfect forward for them. However, he'll need another year in the WHL, I think. Great pick. It will bring some grit into the Thrashers lineup without skimping on skill.

5:37: The Avs now make their selection. No surprise here, it is Matt Duchene. He'll be wonderful for the franchise. A real game-changer at last. Look for Wojtek Wolski to be put on the market now.

5:36: While the Avs increase the butt dent in their chair, Bettman announces the trade of Pronger to the Flyers for Sbisa, Lupul and two firsts. Flyers get fleeced.

5:24: With the second overall pick the Lightning pick Victor Hedman with a "no duh!" pick of the night. It's time they learned to play defense. He will help them get back to being competitive. Leaves Duchene for the Avs.

5:18: After all the spectulation, the Islanders save Nassau Coliseum by selecting John Tavares. Smart pick Garth. If you wanted to save the franchise, he's the easy choice, no matter the knocks. He's got a name and skills.

5:16: Bettman just gave his awful address. No speaky French, Gary.

5:11: Still speculating on the first pick. This time it literally is like Dominos.

5:00: The anticipation builds as the draft looms closer.

4:30: Am in the chatroom at theGoalieGuild.com, if you'd care to chat. I'm Avalangelist.

An hour before the draft officially starts, rumors are flying that Garth Snow will draft Matt Duchene first overall. Tavares posted earlier this afternoon on his twitter page that his “Agent says the Avs or Toronto look like my destination.”

So look out Avs fans, assuming the rumors are right and we don’t get yet another draft twist, there are three likely scenarios. Scenario 1: Tampa Bay selects Victor Hedman and the Avs select John Tavares. Scenario 2: Tampa Bay trades the second overall pick to Toronto who selects Tavares and Hedman “falls” to the Avs. Scenario 3: Tampa Bay drafts Hedman and the Avs trade the pick to Toronto who then select Tavares.

Of all the scenarios, I think the first one is most likely. Tavares will for sure have to show that he can work, play defense, as well as score, in order to be a success in the Western Conference.

According to Jim Tombolesi out of Buffalo, “His uncle (John Tavares) plays for the Buffalo Bandits, which is the indoor (Lacross) team here in Buffalo. If he is anything like his uncle, Taveres is first class all the way!”

Tavares has had many critics on him the past couple of months but it will be impossible to really judge him until he takes the ice against other pro competition (AHL or NHL).

As for the rest of the draft, look for the Avs to maybe pull off another trade or two. My feeling is that Wolski, at least, will be moved. Look out for Svatos, Clark, Budaj, Smyth or Liles to be moved in any combination.

Regardless of what happens, here’s a good speech about this weekend and work involved in it:
