Update: The Sharks have flipped Hoffman along with a 2018 seventh round draft pick to the Florida Panthers in exchange for Florida’s 2019 second round pick and two 2018 picks, a fourth-rounder and a fifth-round pick.

I knew it was odd that the Sharks social media didn't announce the first trade. Looks like San Jose has their sights set on a bigger fish
.

The San Jose Sharks caught lightning in a bottle with the addition of Evander Kane, despite questions about his attitude and his past. The Sharks hope lightning strikes twice with the acquisition of Mike Hoffman from the Ottawa Senators.

San Jose sent Mikkel Boedker, Juuliuis Bergman and a 6th round draft pick in 2020 to the Sens for Hoffman, Cody Donaghey and a 5th round pick in 2020.

Hoffman's fiancee Monika Caryk has been accused of harassing Ottawa star Erik Karlsson and his wife Melinda, up to and including wishing someone would end Karlsson's career with a hit to the legs and mocking the couple about their stillborn son

Interestingly enough as I write this the Sharks social media hasn't announced the deal yet.

The Sharks wanted offense. Hoffman brings offense. The 28-year-old has 230 points (107g 123a) in 342 career NHL games, including 22 or more goals in the last four seasons.

I really liked the Kane deal, but as of this moment I'm not a fan of bringing this guy and the baggage he's carrying into the Sharks locker room. Hoffman and Pete Deboer have a history too. Deboer once coached Hoffman when he was with the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL.... and he waived him.

Are other players going to want to sign as a free agent in San Jose knowing they have suddenly become the Island of Misfit Toys?

And does this officially end the Sharks pursuit of Ilya Kovalchuk and the beginning of the Slava Voynov years in San Jose? Although Kovy probably fits into to SJ's plan better now.

Let me know what you think of this deal and what it means for the Sharks heading into free agency and the season.

Thanks for reading,
Steve
