In this edition of the hotstove, we share our thoughts on the trade that saw Arizona send Max Domi to Montreal in exchange for Alex Galchenyuk.

I like this deal for Arizona. From 2012-17, Galchenyuk averaged 21.7 goals per 82 games on 13.34% shooting. This past season his shooting percentage dipped to a career low 8.9% and he still managed to pile up 19 goals and 51 points. Had he shot his career average, you'd be looking at ~28 goals and 60 points. An offensively starved team like Montreal sure could use that!
Domi is a better playmaker at full strength, and plays with more of an edge, but goal scoring is the toughest skill to acquire – rightfully so – and Galchenyuk is far superior in that area. The Coyotes did well here.

This is a tough one to figure out. First there was obviously an issue with Galchenyuk and the Habs in some way. That relationship never seems to be one that was working right. Second the Habs also valued a Centre as a prime target so they got a winger and got rid of a Centre????
This seems to be a bit of shuffling the deck chairs for Montreal and by giving up one of the few quality centres try have it makes me think there’s something else coming. Domi is a great talent but he’s not a cure-all for what ails Montreal. Something else is coming and I wonder if Bergevin is ready to deal the 3rd overall pick for the player he needs now to compliment his wingers in Domi and Drouin.
