The Penguins had been tied to rumors surrounding Max Domi of the Arizona Coyotes. It seemed to be getting traction in the rumor mills. The Penguins will not be getting Max Domi. Marc Bergevin has finally traded Alex Galchenyuk in exchange for Domi.

I was never completely sold on the idea that Max Domi was a definite upgrade over the likes of Conor Sheary. I compared the two in a previous blog

Max Domi has played on a bad team while Sheary has been with Sidney Crosby for a good chunk of time on a championship caliber team. Even with those team effects in play I don’t believe it closes the gap enough for the Penguins to automatically improve by making that move. I suppose it would give them some extra cap space, but there are legit questions about Domi’s goal scoring ability at this point which was supposed to be a strength. His goal scoring has decreased in effectiveness with each passing year.

Alex Galchenyuk is a center who was never allowed to play center in Montreal. He was viewed as a defensive liability. He had the unfortunate situation of playing under Michel Therrien for the majority of his career so far. Rick Tocchet is no better, but at least Arizona has plans on using him at the center position. At best Montreal breaks even on this trade. There haven’t been too many best case scenarios that have played out for Montreal recently. They are a mess. They make one for one trades for players at the same position with such a minimal chance of improving the team. Marc Bergevin is on the same level as Peter Chiarelli as far as the general managers you need to call.

I think the Penguins were fine to miss out on Max Domi. I don’t know if Max Domi will be so lucky missing out on the Penguins.
