Updated Rumours on Erik Karlsson and Mike Hoffman

Normally I wouldn’t be posting trade rumours about the same players twice in the same week, but I think these updates are quite important. Apologies for not being able to write a longer post about this, but at least some of the information here is pretty interesting.

Last Thursday, I talked about the Erik Karlsson and Mike Hoffman trade rumours and now there is even more to share. Before today, we hadn’t really heard much about actual trade proposals for Karlsson, besides a deal involving Cody Glass and some draft picks. Elliotte Friedman had more to add to the situation on Calgary’s Sportsnet 960 though:

“I think if Ottawa makes that deal with them, they’ll want to go pretty young. I had heard that one of the reasons it didn’t happen happen at the deadline – and it was close – was Cody Glass, who was their sixth overall pick last year. I could see Vegas saying, ‘We don’t want to do that’ because if they do do a Karlsson deal, it’s probably going to be something along the lines of Glass, a high pick, and maybe like a Colin Miller or something like that. That’s the kind of thing I’m guessing that it’s structured around.”

Obviously, that package is not as good as Karlsson, but if Vegas is going to offer something like that, the Senators might have to take it. Miller is at least a second pairing defenseman, and Glass has the potential to be a first line centre and could be in the NHL next season. The Knights don’t have a 2018 first round pick which is too bad, but they have plenty of picks in the drafts after that. Ottawa would at least be getting back some quality talent, and it’s hard to ask for a ton more considering Karlsson only has one year left on his contract.

In addition, if the Senators are set on dumping Bobby Ryan, then the return would probably be much less. In the end, if Karlsson is traded, I’m sure everyone will be underwhelmed. But Dorion has no leverage here because teams know he is going to be desperate, and teams also won’t want to give up a ton for someone they might not be able to re-sign.

It’s not a fun situation.

Then there’s Hoffman, who seems like he is most likely to be moved according to Darren Dreger and Pierre LeBrun. On Graeme Nichols’ (6th Sens) most recent article, he talks about how a trade with Hoffman wouldn’t be due to his on-ice performance:

Obviously it’s hard to speculate on exactly what happened and nobody really knows what kind of teammate that Hoffman is, but there could be something there. In a strange way, I sort of hope that there’s an off-ice issue, because trading him due to his on-ice performance would be ludicrous.

We have heard small rumblings about this regarding Hoffman in the past, but I don’t know how much to believe, especially because there are never any concrete details. Still though, if there’s any ounce of truth to that, I’m sure he’s good as gone. I just really hope that Pierre Dorion doesn’t rush him away for anything that he can get like Peter Chiarelli did with Taylor Hall.
