Pittsburgh never saw this version of Marc-Andre Fleury

The Vegas Golden Knights are heading to the Stanley Cup Final and the biggest reason for their success has been none other than Marc-Andre Fleury. The former Penguin is having quite the season. Pittsburgh fans thought that they’ve seen it all with Flower, but the fact of the matter is they never saw him play as well as he is right now. At 33 years old he is having the best season of his career.

This is certainly not the norm and I could try to explain why it is happening, however it would be fruitless. I don’t really think there is a good explanation. He’s just playing great. The playoffs haven’t always been kind to Fleury as you can see above. The playoffs have never been as good to him as this year. It has been ten years since he’s played this well, ten(!)

If the Penguins would have found a way to beat Detroit in 2007-08 Fleury would have (should have) been the Conn Smythe winner. I believe he’s at a point now that even if the Golden Knights lose the final he could potentially pull a Jean-Sebastian Giguere and win the award anyways. That is how great he’s played.

How is Vegas doing this?! Marc-Andre Fleury is putting together one of the best seasons during the salary cap era as a goaltender. That is pretty much what it boils down to.

Why couldn’t he do this more often for the Penguins? Don’t blame the team.

For whatever reason Fleury only had one season that even comes close to 2017-18. He has to own his shortcomings from the past just like he should own his spectacular play in the present.

Whatever happens in the Stanley Cup Final Marc-Andre Fleury is doing things he never did in Pittsburgh. He’s never played better.
