The Let Down happened, Series tied 1-1

The emotional let down of the game seven win finally caught up with the Winnipeg Jets and the result was a 3-1 win for the Vegas Golden Knights. Let's be clear the Jets weren't bad but they were not like the team from game seven vs Nashville and game one of this series. To that point nor was Vegas like the team in game one either.

What seems to have happened is the emotional fatigue set in and mistakes appeared more plentiful and more costly. The first goal was due to the weak play by Laine on the boards and not bing able to get the puck out. The second goal was the give away by Kyle Connor while the four other Jets skaters on the ice- the blame goes all around.

With Kyle Connor getting the Jets within one in the third the Golden Knights struck back with a fury as a quick rush a minute later had Marchessault get them back to a two goal lead and the eventual final score of 3-1.

Game Thoughts

If you are a Jets fan you probably have an issue with the officiating last night- fair enough but a Golden Knights fan might have the same issue from game one. It was not good last night but that's not what cost the Jets the game.

I tweeted out last night that Vegas is a one trick pony but the trick is very obvious. I should have added it's a very good trick but it's their only one. This is a puck pressure and attack team and if that is not allowed they do not have anything else. The Jets did not counter at all last night and as many have suggested a bit of emotional fatigue may have set in.

One other thing I tweeted about was how the Golden Knights changed lines/players. It was very aggressive and a few times you could see the Jets look for too many men. In fact Byfgulien made an effort to draw a penalty by flinging the puck into the bench area from behind his own end. If I'm Paul Maurice I'm looking at tape and trying to find out how to get the officials aware of this and watch it more closely.

If you look at the game as a whole it reads like a routine 3-1 win for Vegas but the goals were due to the three best opportunities by Vegas being realized. The Jets had their opportunities but the posts and luck simply kept the puck out and that was the difference. The Jets won the shot share battle, they won the scoring chance battles, what they didn't do was win the little battles. Those were the ones that gave Vegas their chances and their goals. That's an easy fix but it's also part of learning what has to happen in each round as the intensity goes up.

The Jets did not win the game but given the way they played at even strength they will win more than they lose and Jets fans should take solace in that as the series moves to Vegas.
