The Supreme Court in the US opened up some serious doors that will allow for much more sports betting in the United States...beyond Nevada...Many wondered if this would affect the NHL in any way...or whether the league would even acknowledge the change...

It only took a few hours, but the NHL made a statement which opened a few eyes and raised some questions...

“The Supreme Court’s decision today paves the way to an entirely different landscape – one in which we have not previously operated. We will review our current practices and policies and decide whether adjustments are needed, and if so, what those adjustments will look like. It’s important to emphasize that the Supreme Court’s decision has no immediate impact on existing League rules relating to sports wagering, and particularly, wagering involving NHL games. So, while changes may be considered in the future, today’s decision does not directly impact the operation of the League or any of our Clubs in the short term.”

Let's parse that out a bit.

The Supreme Court’s decision today paves the way to an entirely different landscape

This sounds like the NHL may have some ideas how to turn this into an advantage...gambling on NHL.com would be the least likely possibility, but the fact that the NHL is saying it "paves" the way to me sounds like the NHL is welcoming a clean fresh slate from which to look at this.

We will review our current practices and policies and decide whether adjustments are needed, and if so, what those adjustments will look like.

To me this sounds like a direct reference to the way the NHL reports injuries...The NFL is much more "gambling aware" and has gone to an open book policy on injuries...however, in the NHL this could be something the NHLPA could have something to say about... A player with a broken wrist who is playing in the playoffs sure doesn't want everyone on the other team hacking away...What other adjustments could be needed? Stricter rules on players or team employees gambling with "insider info?"

It’s important to emphasize that the Supreme Court’s decision has no immediate impact on existing League rules relating to sports wagering, and particularly, wagering involving NHL games.

This feels like it is directed at the players...When someone states there will be no "immediate" impact it is implying that there very well may be some other unforeseen, or even foreseen, changes on the way...

So, while changes may be considered in the future, today’s decision does not directly impact the operation of the League or any of our Clubs in the short term.

This clears up any immediate concerns, and in really all that they needed to say/ unless there is something else coming...something the NHL is working on....

Final thoughts...

I am not opposed to sports gambling in any way.. I have never gambled on a sporting event beyond playing some Draft Kings last year, but I do get the importance of it, why people love it, and why the NHL wants people betting...Why else would a person watch an out-of-town game late at night unless they had some action on it?

I have said this before, but it bears repeating...those at the NHL top management level are constantly aware of, and comparing themselves to, the other major sports.. The NHL is more popular than it's ever been, but they don't always see that because compared to football and baseball it isn't really close...

What's the buzz?

What do you think will change?
Are you going to gamble on hockey now?
Do you think the NHL should have gambling on NHL.com?

Interested in your opinions...
