To no one’s surprise, Mathew Barzal was named one of the three Calder trophy finalists Sunday.
Barzal, the 16th overall pick in the 2015 draft, had 22 goals and 63 assists in 82 games. The 63 assists tied Bryan’s Trottier’s franchise record for most assists by a rookie. Barzal led all rookies with 85 points, which was 20 more than fellow nominee, Coyotes forward Clayton Keller.
Canucks forward Brock Boeser was the third nominee.

Barzal is the first Islander rookie to be nominated for the Calder since Michael Grabner in 2010. When, not if, Barzal wins, he will be the fifth Islander to win the award (Denis Potvin, Trottier, Mike Bossy and Bryan Berard).
